The draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill was approved by the Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Sunday. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said it will be introduced during the state Assembly’s monsoon session beginning on July 20.
Excluding the tribal community, the proposed bill covers diverse aspects, such as marriage, live-in relationships, adoption, and inheritance, PTI reported.

The bill was approved during a speical cabinet meeting in Jagdishpur on the outskirts of the state capital.
Talking to mediapersons, Mohan Yadav called it an important step towards women’s empowerment, adding that nearly 80 per cent of Muslim women and 40 per cent of Muslim men supported the bill before the committee formed to draft it.
He highlighted that the marriageable age for men is 21, and the same for women is 18, adding that marriage registration remains mandatory under the UCC.
Urging all political parties to rise above party politics and support the bill, Mohan Yadav said it aims to strengthen social harmony and national unity.
The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister claimed that the BJP, AAP and Left parties presented their views before the committee, but Congress abstained to do so as it sees every issue from a Hindu-Muslim and vote bank perspective.
He noted that the bill provides equal legal status for all children born through marriage, live-in relationships, adoption, surrogacy, and ART (assisted reproductive technology).1
